How to choose a standard

Pipelines carrying oil, gas or water are usually specified to API 5L (ISO 3183). Choose PSL1 for ordinary service and PSL2 when the specification asks for impact testing, tighter chemistry or sour service (PSL2 with Annex H).

Plant piping for steam, hot water and hydrocarbons is usually ASTM A106 Grade B. Many mills certify the same pipe as A106 Grade B, A53 Grade B and API 5L Grade B at once. If your specification says ASTM A53, ask for Type S: A53 also covers welded pipe.

Cold service below about −29 °C needs impact-tested pipe such as ASTM A333 Grade 6, tested at −45 °C.

Boilers and heat exchangers use tubes ordered by outside diameter and wall thickness: ASTM A192 and GB/T 3087 for boilers, ASTM A179 for heat exchangers and condensers, and GB/T 9948 for refinery furnaces and petrochemical service.

European and older designs may name EN 10216-1 (P235TR1/TR2, P265TR1/TR2) or the legacy DIN 1629 grades St37.0, St44.0 and St52.0. St52.0 has no EN 10216-1 equivalent, so check the design before substituting.
