At a glance
GOST 8732 sets the sizes of hot-formed seamless steel pipe: outside diameter 20–550 mm and wall 2.5–75 mm. GOST 8731 sets the technical requirements and the delivery groups А, Б, В, Г and Д. Process and pressure piping is usually ordered in group В, in steel 20 or 09G2S. GOST pipe is supplied to order from mills that certify it; otherwise we offer ASTM or API pipe with an equivalence note.

Documents
Mill test certificate to EN 10204 3.1, naming the producing mill and the country of origin. Third-party inspection by an agency you nominate, or EN 10204 3.2, on request.
Packing and marking
Hexagonal bundles with steel straps, plastic end caps, a bundle tag (standard, size, heat number, pieces, weight) and stencil marking on each pipe.

Sizes and lengths (GOST 8732)
Pipe is ordered by outside diameter and wall thickness in millimetres, for example 108 × 4, 159 × 6 or 219 × 8. The range runs from 20 to 550 mm OD and from 2.5 to 75 mm wall. Random length is 4 to 12.5 m. Fixed lengths and multiples of a fixed length are cut within that range.
Delivery groups (GOST 8731)
- А: mechanical properties guaranteed.
- Б: chemical composition guaranteed.
- В: both mechanical properties and chemical composition guaranteed.
- Г: chemical composition, plus mechanical properties tested on heat-treated samples.
- Д: hydrostatic test pressure only.
Group В is the usual choice for pressure service, but your project specification decides. В is the Cyrillic letter (pronounced “V”), not a Latin B.
The 2025 editions
In Russia, GOST 8731-74 and GOST 8732-78 were replaced by GOST 8731-2025 and GOST 8732-2025 from 1 March 2026. Most specifications still cite the -74 and -78 editions, and each country sets its own date for the new ones. The order and the certificate name the edition your project requires.
Equivalent ASTM and API grades (approximate)
By minimum strength, steel 20 (tensile 412 MPa, yield 245 MPa) is close to ASTM A106 Grade B and API 5L Grade B. EN 10216-1 P235TR1 is weaker and is not an equivalent. These pairings are approximate: chemistry, tests, tolerances and size systems differ, and no standard declares the grades interchangeable. Sizes differ too: some GOST diameters, such as 108, 133, 159 and 426 mm, have no NPS counterpart. Your engineer decides on any substitution, based on the actual mill certificate.
How to order
Send the size (OD × wall, mm), the steel grade (for example 20 or 09G2S / 09Г2С), the delivery group, the length (random, or fixed in metres) and the quantity in tonnes or metres. GOST compliance is shown by the mill’s quality certificate for the actual lot.
